Cranberry Portage Modernizes Lift Station Monitoring with Cattron’s Wireless Solutions

Overview

Cranberry Portage, a small community in northern Manitoba, faced a challenge common to many municipalities: aging wastewater infrastructure, frequent sewer backup risks, and limited resources for proactive maintenance. These challenges threatened public health and the environment and carried financial risks through costly emergency repairs and insurance exposure.

Norman Risk Consulting partnered with ACS Contracting to deliver an affordable, data-driven solution to transform how Cranberry Portage manages its wastewater lift stations by leveraging Cattron’s Messenger BLE  and the RemoteIQ™ cloud platform.

The Challenge: Outdated Systems and High Costs

Like many small communities, Cranberry Portage was operating with:

  • 30+ year-old infrastructure
  • Frequent sewer backup posed environmental and health hazards
  • Reactive maintenance leading to high emergency costs and operational downtime
  • Limited tools for proactive planning and budget forecasting

When these systems fail, the impact ripples through the community, affecting health, safety, tourism and long-term economic growth. For a remote municipality with a tight budget, every emergency callout meant diverting funds from other critical services.

The Solution: Wireless Monitoring That Works Anywhere

Norman Risk Consulting introduced a Cattron solution designed to bring real-time visibility and predictive insights to Cranberry Portage’s wastewater system without the cost and complexity of traditional SCADA systems.

Key Technologies Deployed:

  • Messenger BLE: A low-power wireless communication device is installed on lift station equipment to track pump cycles, wear, and anomalies.
  • RemoteIQ: A secure, cloud-based platform aggregating data from Messenger BLE devices and presenting it in a simple, intuitive dashboard accessible 24/7 from any connected device.

What Makes This Solution Different?

  • Simple Setup: No complex wiring or expensive infrastructure upgrades.
  • Cost-Effective: Ideal for municipalities with limited budgets.
  • Proactive Maintenance: Alerts operators before issues become failures.
  • Scalable Design: Start with a single station and expand system-wide.

Pilot Launch: Proving the Value

The project began with a pilot installation in February 2025 at one of Cranberry Portage’s lift stations. The goal was to:

  • Establish baseline performance data
  • Detect issues early to prevent failures
  • Provide actionable insights for maintenance teams

The results were immediate. Operators could monitor pump performance in real time, track cycles, and receive early warning about anomalies. Where operators were once manually checking lift stations 6-8 times a day, they could now view data remotely, giving them control over their assets. This enabled better preventive maintenance scheduling and extended the life of aging assets.

Expansion and Long-Term Planning

Based on the pilot’s success, the system was expanded to two additional lift stations. This wider deployment strengthened the community’s ability to:

  • Reduce emergency callouts
  • Improve data-driven budgeting and capital planning
  • Increase emergency preparedness
  • Share performance reports with insurers to justify lower premiums

What started as a single-station pilot evolved into a strategic approach to risk management and infrastructure resilience.

The Results: Measurable Benefits

Cranberry Portage is now operating with industry-grade monitoring capabilities at a fraction of the cost. Here are the key outcomes:

  • Lower Insurance Risk and Premiums: Data-backed risk reports demonstrate proactive asset management.
  • Fewer Overflows and Failures: Issues are detected before they become emergencies.
  • Extended Equipment Life: Predictive insights help schedule maintenance and delay costly replacements.
  • Smarter Budgeting and Funding Opportunities: Data supports grant applications and long-term capital planning.
  • Community Confidence: Reliable infrastructure boosts public health and economic stability.

Why It Matters for Small Municipalities

This case study proves small municipalities can adopt innovative infrastructure strategies without massive investment. By using Cattron’s Messenger BLE and RemoteIQ monitoring platform, communities gain the same data-driven capabilities that leading industries rely on at a scale and cost designed for local government.

Cattron’s solutions help municipalities like Cranberry Portage take control of their infrastructure, reduce risk, and confidently manage budgets.
