Enhancing Rail Safety and Efficiency
Pullback Stopping Protection

Safety and efficiency are paramount in the fast-paced world of rail operations. Cattron’s Pullback Stopping Protection (PSP) is a proven solution that enhances safety and optimizes switching operations by introducing an automated, self-activating system designed for remote-controlled locomotives. This feature is available on several Cattron locomotive remote control systems, including the LCS-III and Transport VS.
What is Pullback Stopping Protection?
PSP is a safety mechanism that allows locomotives to automatically follow a predefined stopping trajectory on a designated pullback track without requiring direct operator intervention. By automating the stopping process, PSP enables crew members to remain safely positioned on the car side of the operation, reducing the risk of accidents and improving workflow efficiency.
The stopping trajectory is controlled by a series of strategically placed transponders that progressively reduce the locomotive’s speed as it moves along the pullback track. This controlled deceleration ensures that the locomotive reaches a complete stop at the End of Pullback, enhancing both operational precision and safety.
How PSP Works
PSP-equipped locomotives are designed to detect Pullback Track Entry automatically. Upon detecting an entry or exit transponder, the system executes the pre-programmed stopping trajectory. Throughout this process:
- The transponder subsystem dictates the maximum allowable speed, overriding any operator-commanded higher speed.
- However, any operator-commanded speed lower than the preset trajectory is recognized as the operative movement speed, allowing for additional control flexibility.
Dual-Redundant Safety System
To maximize reliability and safety, PSP employs a dual-redundant control system:
- Primary Control – Transponder Subsystem: Utilizes track-mounted transponders detected by the onboard locomotive system to enforce the stopping trajectory.
- Secondary Control—GPS Subsystem: This subsystem provides real-time computation of locomotive speed, direction, and position to supervise compliance with the stopping trajectory. It includes a Region/Sub Map/Subzone structure to oversee PSP operation across all designated pullback tracks within a company’s network.
Customized System Design for Every Operation
Each rail environment is unique, and Cattron’s PSP is designed with customization in mind. When a customer requests PSP, Cattron provides a PSP Layout Information Requirement Form, which captures critical track details necessary for system design, such as:
- Single dead-end pullback track with a single entry route
- Multiple adjacent pullback tracks
- Pullback tracks with multiple entry/exit routes
- Exact location of grade-level crossings
Using this information, Cattron engineers develop a PSP solution tailored to each customer’s specific operational and geographical requirements.
Key PSP Design Features
Cattron’s PSP system includes a range of critical design and operational functions:
- Multiple GPS Subzones for adjacent pullback tracks
- PSP hardware requirements and self-checking redundancy control
- Automated Pullback Entry, Exit, and End-of-Pullback stops
- Optional PSP Crossing Warning with Automatic Horn and Bell
- PSP Override and Disable Features for operational flexibility
- PSP Mode Status indicators for operators
Proven Safety and Productivity Enhancement
With nearly two decades of successful deployment across multiple Cattron remote control locomotive systems, PSP has consistently demonstrated its value in improving safety and efficiency. By integrating automated stopping protocols and dual-redundant control, PSP significantly reduces human error and enhances railyard productivity.
For organizations looking to optimize their rail operations while prioritizing crew safety, Cattron’s Pullback Stopping Protection stands as a time-tested, innovative solution.
