Radio Remote Control for Rotary Coal Dumper Operations

Cattron’s latest deployment of a wireless locomotive control system at a coal handling facility exemplifies the versatility and safety enhancements our technology brings to coal dumper operations. This note details the system’s unique features, operational benefits, and safety enhancements, particularly in environments resistant to complete remote control locomotive (RCL) operations.

System Overview

The Transport TC locomotive control system integrates with a console transmitter to manage a rotary coal dumper, which is critical in the movement and processing of coal at industrial facilities. The system is uniquely designed to interact seamlessly with the existing infrastructure, providing intelligent controls without needing full locomotive remote control.

Key Features

Selective Tractive Effort Interruption: Unlike typical systems, the RCL-II only interrupts the locomotive’s tractive effort when moving towards the coal dumper. This allows for unrestricted movement in the opposite direction, enhancing operational efficiency.

Safety Protocols: If the system fails to receive the correct signal, it immediately disables the generator field circuit and applies the brakes to the locomotive, ensuring maximum safety.

Intelligent Monitoring: The system monitors critical components such as the locomotive throttle handle and reverser. This monitoring capability makes the system smarter, providing end users greater flexibility and control.

Operational Benefits

Enhanced Safety: By integrating advanced safety protocols, the Cattron system significantly reduces the risk to customers’ assets and protects equipment against operator error, preventing costly shutdowns due to equipment damage. The system utilizes similar industry standards, such as lockout and tag out, to prevent resources from accidentally disabling the Cattron permissive system. Only approved personnel can disable the system using locked switches and padlocks.

Operational Efficiency: Selectively controlling locomotive movements minimizes unnecessary restrictions, allowing for smoother and faster operations.

Flexibility and Control: Operators receive real-time feedback and control, allowing immediate adjustments and enhancing overall operational effectiveness. Cattron’s integrated LCD informs personnel when movement is permitted and when restricted movement is not permitted. This information improves the user experience and keeps the locomotive engineer informed.

What sets Cattron’s remote control system apart is its ability to enhance safety without fully automating locomotive movements. This is particularly beneficial when customers are hesitant to implement full remote control operations. Our system’s adaptability proves that it can meet specific customer needs, adding layers of safety and efficiency without overhauling existing operational frameworks.
